    Shenzhen Synthetic Biology Infrastructure

    The Shenzhen Synthetic Biology Infrastructure aims to establish a foundational platform for the intelligent design and automated construction of artificial life systems. Grounded in synthetic biology research, this facility introduces intelligent manufacturing concepts from industrial automation into synthetic biology. It employs intelligent, automated, and high-throughput equipment to build a platform for the synthesis, assembly, implantation, activation, and testing of biological components, complex networks, and artificial cells. Combined with advanced design software and machine learning, the facility enables rapid, low-cost, and iterative completion of the “Design-Build-Test-Learn” cycle, achieving rational design and synthesis of artificial life systems.

    Located in Guangming Science City, the facility spans approximately 33,610 m² with a 60-month construction timeline (civil engineering and utilities funded separately). It began trial operations in late 2023. Upon full completion, it will be a global leader in intelligent life system design and manufacturing, serving as a large-scale synthetic biology research infrastructure that integrates software control, hardware integration, and synthetic biology applications, providing robust support for synthetic biology research nationwide.
