Synthetic biology is an emerging interdisciplinary frontier science and a quintessential convergent technology. Rooted in life sciences and integrating principles and methods from multiple disciplines, it develops enabling technologies such as genome editing, de novo protein design, and intelligent cells. By designing and synthesizing new biological systems or redesigning natural ones, synthetic biology serves dual purposes as the “key to understanding life” (Build to Learn) and as a transformative technology for shaping the future (Build to Use).

“Build to Learn” provides a new research paradigm for understanding the laws and essence of life. By constructing biological systems “from the bottom up”, it explores the underlying principles of functional emergence as biological complexity increases during the origin and evolution of life.

“Build to Use” demonstrates the immense application potential of synthetic biology. Through biological design and advancements in enabling technologies, it drives iterative upgrades in biotechnology and transformative changes in the bio-manufacturing industry, offering scientific solutions to address the challenges of sustainable development facing human society.

The Faculty of Synthetic Biology, in deep synergy with the Institute of Synthetic Biology at the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has built a world-class faculty team and research and teaching platforms. These provide students with exceptional learning and innovation opportunities, empowering young scholars to realize their dreams.
