Synthetic biology is an emerging interdisciplinary frontier science and a paradigmatic convergent technology. Grounded in life sciences and integrating principles and methodologies from multiple disciplines, it fosters enabling technologies such as genome editing, de novo protein design, and intelligent cells engineering. By designing and synthesizing new biological systems or redesigning natural ones, synthetic biology functions as both the “key to understanding life” (Build to Learn) and a transformative technology for shaping the future (Build to Use).

"Build to Learn" offers a new research paradigm for understanding the laws and essence of life. By constructing biological systems "from the bottom up", it explores the underlying principles of functional emergence as biological complexity increases throughout life's origin and evolution.

"Build to Use" demonstrates the immense application potential of synthetic biology. Through biological design and advancements in enabling technologies, it drives iterative upgrades in biotechnology and transformative shifts in the bio-manufacturing industry, providing scientific solutions to address the sustainable development challenges confronting human society.

The Faculty of Synthetic Biology, working in close synergy with the Institute of Synthetic Biology at the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has developed a world-class faculty team and cutting-edge research and teaching platforms.
